The application process for CAT 2018 has already been started from 8th August 2018. CAT 2018 exam is scheduled to be held on November 25, 2018 in two sessions – forenoon and afternoon. As IIM Calcutta has also announced a few changes in CAT 2018 pattern.

This year, the CAT questionnaire should contain fewer multiple choice questions and more key-in answer type questions. If you plan to appear for CAT 2018, here are few things to know:

  • Change in exam pattern: According to the official notification, this year's CAT questionnaire will have fewer MCQs in all sections, while the number of questions requiring the candidate to enter the answer will increase. This change will affect the candidate preparation strategy as they would have done under the old model. In addition to changing the number of question types, the examination pattern remains the same with three sections: verbal ability and reading comprehension, data interpretation and logical reasoning, and quantitative ability, to be solved chronologically. Each section was allocated 60 minutes. The candidate can neither skip nor return to the previous section at any time.

  • Number of test cities: This year, the number of test cities has increased from 144 to 147. New cities and centers have been added to accommodate all CAT candidates in both sessions.

  • Choice of test centers and test sessions: Candidates have the choice between four cities (for the test center) to the list of 147 cities according to their preference. However, applicants are not able to assign test locations based on availability and a test session is randomly assigned.

  • CAT 2018 mock tutorial: As mock tutorial on CAT 2018 will be published on October 17, 2018 to help CAT candidates become familiar with the new exam model. Each candidate must take the online tutorial not only to understand the model CAT 2018, but also for other instructions to follow an exam to save time and avoid frenzy.

  • CAT 2018 standardization process: CAT 2018 brand standardization will be performed by adjusting differences in location and scale of score distributions between different forms. The scaled scores obtained by this process will then be converted to percentiles. Candidates will be shortlisted for WAT / PI rounds based on the percentile. The CAT 2018 scorecard will not contain the original but scaled scores for each section and total as well as the percentiles.

  • Increase in application fees: The application fee for CAT 2018 has been increased by 100 rupees (and 50 rupees for students in the reserved category). Last year, registration fees were 1,800 for the general category and 900 for the SC / ST and PwD categories.
